HA's Clients

Some examples projects completed by HA are summarized  below:

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport New Traffic Control Tower and Terminal Radar Control Base Building The Federal Aviation Administration has built a 300 foot tall tower at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.  The facility will have a 17 foot below ground service area and a 300 foot tall tower with cab floor at 275 feet above ground.  The foundation loads are in the range of 30 kips/foot to 18,000 kips/foot with a seismic shear of approximately 2000 kips.  HA has completed site seismic analysis to estimate site acceleration, performed 12-50 foot deep test borings with a percussion type rig, collected soil samples for laboratory testing for physical properties and the presence of contamination.  HA provided the foundation analysis for deep and shallow foundations, foundations on elastic media, basement wall pressures and design parameters, excavation slope stability analysis, correlated foundation interaction with the below ground Automated People Mover Tunnel, and performed a settlement analysis.  HA also participated in discussions with the design team.  Client: Jacobs Facilities.

Williams Field Road Bridge at SR 202HA provided geotechnical exploration services with foundation recommendations for bridge foundation for Williams Field underpass at Santan Freeway (SR 202L) and Williams Field Road in Gilbert, Arizona.  The proposed structures included two bridges, retaining walls, and abutments. HA’s analyzed for deep foundations consisting of drilled shafts (piers) and shallow foundations consisting of spread footings.  All analysis and recommendations were in compliance with the ADOT Materials Preliminary Engineering and Design Mannual, and AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges.  The deep foundation system was analyzed based on deformation limit state design in which the foundation elements are assigned a pre-determined settlement, which is then utilize to correct the load carrying capacity.  While still conservative, this method has the advantages of lowering costs and saving time in construction of drilled shaft foundations.  The shallow foundation system is also considered because the greater Phoenix area frequently has Salt River alluvium consisting of sand, gravel and cobble at shallow depth which can provide very high load carrying capacity if constructed properly.

McKellips Road Bridge Over the Salt River – HA has provided foundation analysis, laboratory soil data analysis, site geologic/geomorphic setting evaluation, and preparation of a final subsurface investigations report for the proposed multi-span bridge.  Bridge foundation analysis included analysis of drilled shaft utilizing load-transfer technology and the deformation limit state design method proposed by AASHTO.  Charts and nomographs were developed in this regard for utilization by the bridge engineers.  HA’s work also included bridge abutment and approach road pavement analysis.  Client: ATL/Parsons Brinkerhoff.

Automated People Mover at Sky Harbor International Airport – HA completed preliminary subsurface investigations for this two mile long underground tunnel to be located at the airport.  The tunnel will traverse beneath the FAA Tower, terminal building and roadways.  HA’s work included a detailed geological and geomorphic analysis of the site, hydrogeology, seismic analysis for life line structures, drilling seven 100 foot deep test borings, laboratory soil testing, engineering analysis of soils and geology in perspective of tunnel construction and liner design, and provided charts/nomographs of soil properties to be utilized by tunnel designers.  The project also included construction of two groundwater monitoring wells.  Client: City of Phoenix.

51st Avenue Bridge Over the Salt River – HA was the geotechnical consultant to Kiewit Western for this design-build project (one of the first major design-build projects in Arizona) and provided geotechnical analysis for foundations, abutment, approach roadways pavement, construction inspection for drilled shaft, girders, deck slabs, bridge piers, approach slabs and roadway sections.  HA was also QC manager for this project and completed caisson non-destructive evaluation by gamma-gamma logging, cross-hole sonic logging and coring.  In 1999 this project received The American Consulting Engineers Award for Quality Control.  Client: Kiewit Western Company.

Arizona Biltmore Golf Course Bridge Over SRP Canal – HA has completed drilling, foundation analysis, analysis of bridge foundation load influence on an underground tunnel for the ACDC canal.  HA’s scope included shallow and deep foundation analysis using AASHTO specifications and foundation models.  Latest publications by Transportation Research Board and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were used to correlate the soils index and engineering properties with foundation models to calculate foundation dimensions and settlement rates in caliche type soil.  HA also used lateral earth pressure models for abutment and impact on a nearby underground tunnel used for the ACDC canal.  Client: Morrison-Maierle, Inc.

Cochise County Regional Landfills Solid Waste Engineering and Design – HA is currently contracted by Cochise County to provide all solid waste engineering services for their Eastern Regional Landfill (ERLF) and Western Regional Landfill WRLF including closure design/construction administration/CQA, new cell design/CQA, and design of ancillary features including leachate impoundments and equipment service/wash facilities.  Our closure project work includes design, construction administration, and QA observation and testing for closure of the ERLF.  HA’s services include: design of the final cover system including drainage system and seeding for erosion control, preparation of specifications for the infiltration barrier layer, response to ADEQ comments, evaluation of borrow source material, and construction administration during construction of the landfill cap; preparation of borrow excavation plan, protective soil cover, and leachate collection system plans/details; liner and slope calculations; and, preparation of the construction specifications and CQA plan.  HA also prepared the bid documents and engineer’s cost estimate.  In support of design, construction administration, and QA observation and testing services that have been or will be performed for the ERLF closure include geotechnical exploration for evaluation of on-site and off-site borrow sources of final cover soils.
